What does "gold plated" mean?

Gold plated jewelry is a popular and affordable alternative to solid gold. Gold plated means that a thin layer of gold has been applied chemically or electroplated over a base metal, such as stainless steel, brass, sterling silver, etc. The resulting jewelry allows you to enjoy the look of solid gold without the price tag.

How should I care for my jewelry?

With any gold plated jewelry, tarnishing and/or fading will be inevitable over time (more specifically, years). The good news is that a little TLC can go a long way toward extending the life of your pieces. We highly recommend the following:

  1. Do not expose your jewelry to any liquids (including water), aerosols, lotions, etc. Take jewelry off before swimming or showering, and put it on well after products such as hairspray, perfume, etc. have dried.
  2. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean off oils and debris from daily wear (like you'd use for glasses or a camera lens). Do not use a gold polishing cloth as it will wear down the gold plating.
  3. Store in a cool, dry place, like a jewelry box. Keeping pieces in separate bags or sections will also help avoid wear and tear.
  4. For an occasional deep clean, you can use warm water and a mild dish soap (nothing anti-bacterial). Dry pieces completely before re-storing.
